Maximianus, first reign, 286-305. Aureus (Gold, 19 mm, 5.35 g, 6 h), Ticinum, 303-304. MAXIMIAN-VS AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Maximianus to right. Rev. X X / MAXI/MIAN/I AVG / SMT within laurel wreath. Calicó 4770 (same dies). Cohen 705. RIC 11b. Lustrous and very attractive, a splendid piece. Good extremely fine.

This issue was struck in celebration of Diocletian's vicennalia on 20 November 303 and presumably distributed as a donative to important officers. It was very likely on this occasion that Diocletian informed his colleague in office that he planned to retire together with him, an epochal event which took place somewhat later, on 1 May 305.
